Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it under consideration for another journal (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is in Times New Roman; uses a 12-point font; is double-spaced; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Papers will be evaluated based upon sound analysis, originality of argument, and novelty of research. Prospective authors are encouraged to consult previous issues of Hemispheres for examples of quality submissions. Below are the requirements for submission:

  • Your submission must be between 5000-8000 words
  • Your work must have been completed during undergraduate study, either in the US or internationally. Authors must be within one year of having finished their undergraduate degree.  
  • Citations should be structured according to the Chicago Manual of Style, with references as endnotes as opposed to footnotes. Submissions lacking full citations will not be accepted.
  • Every paper must include an abstract and any relevant acknowledgements.
  • Place name, email, telephone number, and affiliated institution on front cover page.

2027 Theme: Order Undone

From youth-led protest movements in Madagascar and India to war in Iran, the past year has been characterized by repeated challenges to existing power structures. As breakthroughs in artificial intelligence bolster great-power competition and reshape global communication, disputes over institutional burden-sharing have exposed the fragility of the liberal world order. For the fiftieth volume of Hemispheres, we invite submissions that explore the undoing of long-standing orders. Authors should consider the forces that destabilize entrenched power structures and challenge prevailing norms, as well as the possibilities for new avenues of cooperation and reimagined institutions that may emerge in their wake. 

 

We encourage a broad interpretation of the theme. Potential research areas may include but are not limited to the following:

great-power competition, youth movements, electoral politics, international trade, de-dollarization, technology and international affairs, energy markets, modern warfare, neocolonialism, global health, alliances and international cooperation, climate change, regime change, populism, emerging actors, and soft power.
